About Music for Civil Weddings

There are so many decisions to make when organising a wedding that choosing the music may seem one of the easier preparations to make.

However,  choosing the right piece or pieces or music for each part of the ceremony can be a tricky business and take a lot of thinking about to get right.

The first thing to consider when deciding on your wedding music is that civil wedding ceremonies in England are bound by law not to contain any religious content, which, from a music point of view, are pieces such as Ave Maria and Jesu Joy to name but two. This may also apply to other countries too, so it is best to check with your registrar first.

Another consideration is that most ceremony rooms do not contain an organ, which is the instrument of choice for a church. So if you choose to have live musicians play at your civil ceremony, make choices that are playable by the ensemble that you choose.

For example, “Here Comes The Bride” may not be as suitable for a harp as a lighter piece of music would be, and a piece such as “And I Love Her” by the Beatles may not be as suitable for a string quartet as it would be for a flute and guitar duo.

Of course there is always the CD player that can play just about any music you like, but live music does make a huge difference by adding an atmosphere and professional touch that a CD just can’t create.
